A network protocal that sit on top of Internet Protocal (IP) on the network layers. Internet Control Message Protocol: ICMP is an extension to the IP. It allows for the generation of error messages, test packets, and informational messages related to IP.

The PING command, for example, uses ICMP to test an Internet connection.
