Positives from #Cubs 2017 season:
- Cubs won the National League Central Division for the second year in a row.
- Cubs made the playoffs for the third year in a row.
- Also third year in a row to reach the National League Championship Series.
- The Cubs scored 822 runs, topping 800 runs for the second season in a row,
- Team belted 223 home runs, second-highest single total in franchise history.
- For the first time in club history, six players reached the 20-homer mark:
- - Anthony Rizzo 32 HRs, 156 hits, 32 doubles
- - Kyle Schwarber 30 HRs, 16 doubles
- - Kris Bryant 29 HRs , 162 hits, 38 doubles
- - Ian Happ 24 HRs, 17 doubles
- - Javier Baez 22 HRs, 128 hits, 24 doubles
- - Willson Contreras 21 HRs, 17 doubles
- The Cubs also set a Major League record with five 20-homer seasons by players age 25 or younger
(Bryant, Contreras, Happ, Schwarber and Baez).
- 9 players were in double digits in HR total.
- Rizzo drove in 109 runs, the most by any left-handed batter in the Majors.
Now compare all of that to the #Cardinals and #WhiteSox. Feel better?

I`m back on the Unified Communication Team. I admit, I did not foresee that situation coming,
but life is unpredictable. Technically and professionally I`m going to make the most of this
and some great things to still contribute to this team.
Still enjoying baseball and looking forward to fall baseball.
Cubs are finalizing their season with this win against the Cardinals tonight. I`m hoping the
Cardinals don`t make the wildcard. This will force them to reevaluate their last 4 years, and
hopefully create a team I can enjoy watching again.

Just a few blurbs. It`s Sept 11. Spent a lot of time this morning and afternoon
talking to the kids about that day so long ago now.
Secondly, blah, I`m going to get it out of the way. The Cubs have found a way to let the
Brewers and Cardinals catch up again so that we have a race again in the National League
central. As a Cubs fan, I`m disappointed.

I'm accepting of the fact that the Cubs are close to ruining their whole season in
September. The Cubs would be very lucky to sweep the Mets this week. How game

Working on several web sites now. None of them mine. The most fun is for Morningstar
Church in Normal. Doing a complete redesign for the site.
As far as Hydrogen, I'm writing several modules for saving files. Also work with cell
views and scroll bars.

Over the last two weeks I have pulled up some code I have not worked on for a while.
Hydrogen is a spread sheet program I had started some time ago. This is code that
I have written so far 100% myself. The application has a command line interface and
a GTK GUI interface. At this point I am considering abandoning the CLI interface.
I have been expanding the functionality quite a bit. For example, one thing that
has bothered me about all spread sheet applications that I have ever worked on is
that by looking at a spread sheet, there is no way to tell what cells are data and
what cells are formulas without clicking on the cells. Below is a spread sheet on
MS Excel. B5 on this spread sheet is a simple SUM formula.
One of the most recent changes to my code can be seen by the same spread sheet loaded
into Hydrogen. Inside the cell that has the formula, a icon is placed so that it can
be easily seen as a fomula cell.
If you hover the mouse over the cell, a tool tip will pop up with the formula in the
cell.
Just by looking at the screen shots, it is easy to see that Hydrogen is a very different
spread sheet than MS Excel or most any other spread sheet programs out there, yet it
does the same basic functionality. But my foremost goal has been to make this application
simple in interface and design.

The race is now down to two teams...Brewers and Cubs.
The Cardinals have called it quits with announcing they are
going to start their rebuild before the season ends.
As in now. Today.
Cubs are doing well going into the final stretch.
Just swept the Pirates.
Cubs are now 12 games above 500. Brewers are trailing 3.5 games back.

Pitching is the Cubs weakest of the trinity (Hitting, Pitching, Fielding)
this year. Lester is the only starter expected to get more than 200
strike outs. Lester has also been the most unreliable, and it's not
his fault. He can't be pushed as hard as he once was. That said, it is
hard to go all the way without an ace. I have talked about the runs the
pitching staff has given up, but overall it's better than the first half
of the season.
Of the trinity, hitting is the most skewed.
It is projected that the Cubs will have 6 players with 20 or more
Home Runs. I could not find anything like this in Cubs history.
That is because it has never happened.

I purchased a counterfeit NES with 500 built in games off eBay. So worth my $20.
Paige and I getting to play Super Mario all we want is worth it. Came with 2
controllers, s-video-stereo-audio hookup, power supply, and two horribly written
manuals.
Some of the games back then, in my opinion, were not that great. But some were awesome.
The system is packed with good, great, bad, and awful games.
My biggest disappointments:
#12 - Mortal Kombat 4,and I love the Mortal Kombats series. But this graphics and game
play are horrible.
#127 - Millipede. I love Centipede and always thought the sequel Millipede was the lesser.
With this version of Millipede, they made the game even worse.
What was surprising was how they got some of the arcade classics so right. Examples:
#90 Burger Time.
#96 Defender
#99 Donkey Kong
#100 Donkey Kong Jr.
#101 Donkey Kong 3
#109 Galga
#116 Joust
#125 Mario Bros
#135 Pacman
#147 1942
There are many more I have not tried of course.
The Cubbies are still in First. The Pirates are backing out of the race since I last
wrote about them at 6.5 games out. Cardinals are in second and 1.5 games out still.
I'm did some research on the Cubs and home runs. Currently 5 players on the team
have 20 or more home runs. I could not find another year that this has happened.
Anyone know?

We still have a race for the playoffs. The Cubs had a great July,
but their August in looking a lot like June.
This has allowed the other teams to hang on.

The question I have heard asked over the last couple years is this, "is Ichiro better
than Pete Rose?" Some say Pete, some say Ichiro. So... I have decided to do some
data evaluation. At first glance, both are amazing players with HoF stats. Let compare the two.
First, lets look at batting averages:

I have to give this to Ichiro also although not as big of a win

Obviously Pete does looses in some categories here, but I think wins overall. Neither
are power hitters. Nor were either cleanup hitters. Ichiro is slightly better at
hitting HRs and Pete is better at hitting doubles.

Lastly, lets look at defense. PL does not record errors, so we must look at MLB only.
Given that Ichiro has 7 Gold Gloves in PL, I doubt it matters.

That looks like an easy call. I guess that is why Ichiro has soooo many more

If you take out Ichiro`s PL stats, this contest still easily goes to Ichiro.
The only real difference is should Ichiro PL hits take away for Pete`s Hit title.
With MLB only stats, Pete has the title with 4256 versus Ichiro`s 3061. But if you combine
Ichiro`s total big league hits (no minors), he has 4339 hits.
I also find it interesting how mad the Pete fans get when some expert proclaims Ichiro better.
I think they have good reason to make that statement.

The Rockies stadium, Coors Field, is about a mile above sea level.
Because of the altitude, the field is not a pitcher`s stadium. Baseballs break 20%
less and fly balls carry 20% farther than at Tampa Bay`s stadium, Tropicana Field
at Florida`s sea level altitude. Because of this, the Rockies installed a
humidor room to solve part of the problem. The room houses the baseballs the Rockies use
during their games. This humidor room alters the balls to make them not travel as far.
Wrigley field opened in 1914, but some don`t remember that the Bears pro
football team played at Wrigley field from 1921 to 1970.
They were called the Staleys (because they were originally for Decatur IL) for
the first season but then renamed themselves to coordinate with the Cubs.
The Green Monster wasn`t always green. Boston Red Sox Fenway Field`s
Green Monster is one of the best-known physical features of any major league
ballpark. It has been there since the park opened in 1912, but for its first
35 years, its defining features, tall and lively green, wasn`t always that way. It
wasn`t until 1947 that the wall was painted green. Twenty-eight years later,
the tin wall was replaced with hard plastic. From a distance, the Green Monster
looks like a uniform green sheet, but it`s actually
marked by tens of thousands of dents from the balls that have hit the
wall since its current incarnation was installed in 1975. It has been estimated
164,430 to 211,044 dents.

I made it to Wrigley yesterday to see an awesome game with the Cubs hosting the D-backs.
All the fans were totally, wholly engaged - and for good reason. It was an action packed game (and a long one).
If only the Cubs could have the offense they had August 1st every day of the season,
the Cubs could walk into another World Series title.
Lester did a great job pitching against really good batters with 9 strikeouts (giving up 3 runs),
but just as well hitting with a single and home run. In fact the game was mile stones for Lester
(2oooth strike out and first home run).
The cubs collectively had 17 hits and 16 runs to plow over the D-backs 16-4

The central division is still fairly tight at the end of July.
The Cubs are 2.5 games ahead of the Brewers.
Unlike the other months, the Cubs won 2 games for every
1 game lost in July. In this post, I'm just going to ignore the Pirates and Reds.
Pirates are technically still in the race, but I don't believe they can pull out of the hole.

So the Cubs look like they have turned it around with a really strong month. What has changed?
Defensively:
The biggest improvement was starting pitching.
The Cubs giving up 1st-inning-runs issue became nonexistent. (see older posts)
Offensively:
Contreras and Schwarber have made the right offensive adjustments at the plate.
Because of these facts, the July record shows a huge improvement:

Additionally, the Cubs and the Brewers are just out slugging the Cardinals.
In a previous posts, I also talked about runs and the lack of them for the Cubs.
On July 22, I complied these number:

- The Brewers total-to-year-runs: 475
Today on July 30th.
The Cardinals: 469 [+31 runs]
The Cubs: 484 [+37 runs]
The Brewers: 507 [+32 runs]
So the Cubs have not only kept up, but scraped a few more that the only two teams. The numbers
below illustrate how the Cardinals have struggled compared to the two teams in front of them.

I'm just posting some thoughts on the Cubs and Kyle.
Last year the Cubs ran like a fine tuned large block V-8. This year, we have seen a lot of sputtering.
The Cubs have three dependable offensive play makers, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, and Wilson Contreras.
This has been enough for July.
Now, at this moment, the goal is to put the Brewers in the rear view mirror and keep them there.
To do this, Kyle Schwarber, Ian Happ, and Javier Baez need to be kick-started so that the team is firing
on all cylinder. Kyle's swing is better, but discipline is lacking at times.
During the last two post seasons for the Cubs, Kyle has been their Nitro. For the Cubs to finish this season strong,
we need that boost from him again. If Schwarber can start seeing the ball clearly, the Cubs will drive deeply into
the post season, if his discipline wavers, then there is a huge risk of Cubs fizzling out in the post season, or possibly
not making it at all.

The Cubs have Heyward as lead-off batter with the 1st, 2nd,and 3rd ranked hitters in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th batter spots
(Bryant, Rizzo, and Contreras). Quintana is pitching. So....I like the Cubs chances. Most importantly
a W puts the Cubs back in 1st and taking their last three series :D
Update:
Cubs take the series and are now in 1st. The heroes of the series are Kris Bryant and Wilson Contreras.
Russell, Schwarber, and Heyward were also very instrumental in series. As of tonight the stats for the season are:

Here are the season stats for both team before game 2. Any wonder Cubs have won more games? This is the 12 best
players from each team. Numbers speak. The only area the Cardinals are keeping up with the Cubs is in hitting are in
doubles. Runs though, not that close. Runs are the stat that wins games.
On a side note, Contreras has been the biggest surprise for
the Cubs. Schwarber the biggest downer. Everyone expected Schwarber to be the super-star he showed us in 2015 and 16.
One last thing about the Cubs players. Kris Bryant only has 40 RBIs. Why? Look at the 77 strike outs he leads for
the team. Many of these SOs with runners on base.
All that said, comparing the teams makes me feel better though when bad things happen like the Cards beating the
Cubs (i.e. yesterday) :)

Why did I highlight these numbers? We are a little over half way through the season.
All-Star players should end a season with at least 25 HRs, greater than 150 hits, and 100 RBIs.
Hall-of-Fame players end seasons with 30 or more HRs, 200 hits or greater, and more than 100 RBIs.
As the number above show, yes, offensively the Cubs have better players.
It is not just about the players in general though. The real number-story here (for the Cardinals and Cubs) are the
lack of runs (of course yesterday helped the Cardinals in that area).
Compared to the last two seasons, the Cubs and Cardinals could do so much better with much of the same players.
As I have recently posted numbers on, the Cubs pitching is the other half of the disappointing year.
The Cubs total-to-year-runs: 447
The Cardinals total-to-year-runs: 438
Cubs are inches ahead, but if either team were division leaders:
Astros currently have 566 runs
Dodgers currently have 495 runs
Brewers currently have 475
Nationals currently have 530

I have been wanting to write something on how to score a baseball game the old fashion way;
with pencil, paper, and some cryptic marks :)
In fact, this has been on my to do list for over two years. This will probably be a long post,
so I'm going to break it up into multiple pieces.
NOTE: There are many ways to score and many types of score card formats. The way that I
will be covering is A) one of the oldest formats B) how the MLB explains scoring.
First, I would like to go over the position numbers first.
Part I Understanding position numbers.
Each position is assigned a number. These numbers will be used when you record fielding plays.
the numbers are:
1 = Pitcher
2 = Catcher
3 = First Base
4 = Second base
5 = Third base
6 = Shortstop
7 = Left field
8 = Center field
9 = Right field

Why does shortstop come after 3rd base? I don't know.
An example of how this information is used; if the batter hits the ball to the pitcher, and the pitcher throws to first base
for the out, that is recorded (scored) as a 1 to 3 play - written "1-3" on the bottom right corner of the box.
Secondly, those cryptic marks. I have made a partial list of the more common marks (notations) when
scoring a game.
Part II Understanding more notations.
These are not all notations, but this should be enough for the time being to learn from:
We can now use these notations along with the player positions yesterday to score each
at bat.
For example, if the player strikes out swinging, that is recorded "K" in the box.
Part III How to score
Need to know:
- right bottom  notation for first base
- right top notation for second base
- left top notation for third base
- left bottom notation for home plate
- runs should be circled to help count.
On the imaginary score card above, from an imaginary game, we show Rizzo, Happ, and Bryant as the #1,2, and 3
hitters. I'm only covering the 1st and 2nd innings to demonstrate how to score.
1st Inning - Cubs
1st at bat Anthony Rizzo`s first at bat results in a single.

2nd at bat Happ walks. Rizzo advanced to 2nd on Happ`s walk.

Yesterday I mentioned that starting pitching is the Cubs big issue:
Here are the numbers for Cubs first inning runs allowed
2015: 75 in 162 games (42 with 1+)
2016: 71 in 162 games (40 with 1+)
2017: 80 in in just 88 games (38 with 1+) !!!!
The season is just half way done and the Cubs have given up more than the both whole seasons.
So who is to blame on first inning runs?
Jon Lester: 8 of 19 total starts, 22 runs, 5-3
Jake Arrieta: 6 of 18 total starts, 15 runs, 3-3
John Lackey: 10 of 17 total starts, 13 runs, 4-6
Kyle Hendricks: 4 of 11 total starts, 7 runs, 3-1
Eddie Butler: 3 of 11 total starts, 5 runs, 1-2
Brett Anderson: 4 of 6 total starts, 13 runs, 2-2
Mike Montgomery: 2 of 6 total starts, 5 runs, 0-2

It is All-Star break and the Cubs are 5.5 games back and below 500 with .489.
Most fans and experts agree that it is mostly due to horrible starting pitching.
Lackey, Lester, and Arrieta all look very replaceable.
The good news. The season is not lost, yet.
The offense still has sparks of the last two seasons.

Just a little update. GEDXchange 0.8.9 and 0.8.9B have been released since the last post.
It is highly recommended that if you are using a previous 8.8 version that you upgrade.
There was a bug in the GDX_Death module logic that could result in loss of data.
Here is the current (and small) Road-map to 0.9:
- Record and display genetic material
- About icon
- Confirm all aspects of displayed data can be created within suite
- Confirm all aspects of created data can be displayed within suite

A lot of changes are taking place this winter in the GEDXchange code and documentation.
One of the biggest changes coming up is GEDXchange supporting DNA data.
To do this, I am making changes to ALL the data formats, including GEDCOM
that does not officially support this.
A couple ideas I have are:
