    Tested the joystick and the buttons with a multimeter.
    While I had the control panel open, I mapped the wireing to the control panel:

    Female plug that connects the
    control panel to the main cabinet
    wire harness.
      Pin 2 to Pin 1 [Fire]
      Pin 2 to Pin 3 [Inviso]
      Pin 2 to Pin 4 [Hyperspace]
      Pin 2 to Pin 5 [Smart Bomb]
      Pin 2 to Pin 6 [Thrust]
      Pin 2 to Pin 7 [Reverse]

      Pin 2 to Pin 8 [Player 1]
      Pin 2 to Pin 9 [Player 2]

      Pin 2 to Pin 10 --------
      Pin 2 to Pin 11 [Joystick Up]
      Pin 2 to Pin 12 [Joystick Down]

    Started my keyboard hack interface by drilling the holes

    Mapping:

    If you close a circuit of R4 and B3 the keyboard returns 'e'
    If you close a circuit of R3 and B1 the keyboard returns '1'
    With MAME I am associating the keystroke of 'e' with Hyperspace
    and '1' with start player 1.
    R3 pin 2
        B1 = 1 = [Player 1] pin 8
        B2 = 2 = [Player 2] pin 9
    R4 pin 2
        B1 = a = [Fire] pin 1
        B2 = w = [Inviso] pin 3
        B3 = e = [Hyperspace] pin 4
        B4 = r = [Smart Bomb] pin 5
        B5 = u = [Thrust] pin 6
        B6 = i = [Reverse] pin 7
        B7 = o = [Joy Up] pin 11
        B8 = p = [Joy Down] pin 12
    If it not clear how the wiring will work, maybe this diag will help
